Brief Introduction

To this point, I have outlined the transition from family to organizational membership and described the group and individual dynamics that comprise the joining process. I have outlined the link between organizational roles and the institution’s primary task and pointed to the ways these tasks connect to the needs of the outside society, carrying social ideals and values. In my institutional example, I detailed the combination of interpretation and management necessary to maximize the potential use of the mission as a lens onto society.

In this section, I begin by describing one institution’s interpretive reach into the larger society and explore how different organizational contexts interpret the same phenomena, offering an example of a collaborative interpretation of an aspect of society negotiated across institutional boundaries. Focusing on the United States, I then explore the possibility that nations, too, might have tasks on behalf of society. Through the study of two individuals, I bring these ideas together to illustrate how citizens might discover their authority to take a stand through an examination, interpretation, and synthesis of their memberships in groups and organizations.

In my final chapter, I propose that this systems-psychodynamic exploration of interpretive citizenship suggests a notion of society as a multicellular organism in the process of development. The interpretive stance then becomes a tool for maximizing the voices of citizens so that they can collectively join through their bounded entities in the further development of society.
